We are slowly moving to a severe energy crisis with an ever increasing demand on energy supplies. Our natural resources have a limited supply, yet not enough precautions are being taken to resolve a world crisis. At the rate of consumption on oil supplies we have about 35 years before these supplies are depleted.
  
   The use of fossil fuels, such as coal and oil, are causing long term damage to our world. They not only cause air pollution but reduce the ozone layer and contribute to the greenhouse effect which causes global warming. They also cause untold damage to the environment.
   
   Many countries around the world are moving towards renewable energy sources such as wind power and solar power. Alternative energy production facilities are being built on a large scale all over the world. Large wind farms and solar farms are dotting the landscape everywhere. These facilities are fine for the environment but it does not really help the consumer because the cost is passed on in their utility bill.
  
   So what can the average person do about renewable energy? There are many different ways. You could have solar panels or wind generators installed to reduce your dependence on the power utilities, but this is an expensive undertaking. There will be a reduction in your utility bill but it may take up to 10 years to recover your investment, so is it really worth it?

 

          
   
        A good way to save money on renewable energy is to buld it yourself. It is not as hard or as expensive as you may think.
        A few solar panels or a small windmill could reduce your electric bill by up to 50%, and that is more money in your pocket.
        Small solar panel can be built for under $200. This is a huge saving compared to having a contractor install them.
        You may be able to obtain State or Federal funding to help with your expenses.
        Solar energy is a clean energy with no side effects to the environment and no pollution.
        Solar panels require little maintanance and will usually last up to 25 or 30 years.
        Solar panels are made to stand up to the elements in a northern climate, such as snow, sleet and hail.
        Solar power will raise the value of your property.
  
   There are many advantages to alternative energy. Power from the sun and the wind is free with zero emissions. About 50% of the incoming energy from the sun reaches the earth. Why not use this renewable energy to your advantage? You will decrease your dependancy on the utility company, thus saving money and you will also do your part in helping the environment.
